Pineapple is the second most popular tropical fruit next to bananas. They are a good source of Vitamin C and are very versatile for eating and cooking. Although a pineapple will soften as it ripens, it does not become any sweeter after being picked. Pineapple was cultivated in China as early as 1640. In Europe during the 17th century, pineapple was seen as a status symbol because they were so hard to find. A pineapple requires 18-20 months to produce it's first and only fruit. After it's first growing season, the pineapple will produce 2 fruits and sometimes a third crop will produce 2-3 more. To pick a good pineapple avoid dry brown or yellow leaves. Look for green leaves and an accompanying sweet aroma. Contrary to popular belief, thumping is not a good picking technique.
