Papayas are a tropical fruit but are actually a member
of the berry family. They are high in Vitamin C, Fiber and
Folate. They contain a certain enzyme called papain that
is often used to tenderize meat. To pick a good papaya look
for yellow coloring. Much like a banana, papayas start green
and ripen yellow. You will usually find papayas at stores
to be half ripe (half green). Just take them home and let
them sit at room temperature and away from extreme light.
To speed up the process store your papaya next to apples
or bananas. They breathe ethylene which will help the papaya
ripen.
