Oranges are a major United States crop. The first trees
were planted in the mid-1700's at Spanish Missions in Florida
and California. Today most of the nations orange supply
comes from these two states. Because of soil and climate
differences, the oranges from these two states differ in
texture, color and juiciness. Florida oranges have thinner
skins and are therefore used most often for juicing. California
oranges are easier to peel and are more often eaten whole.
They are all very good sources of Vitamin C. Varieties include
Navel, Valencia, Blood, and Hamlin. The best time for picking
oranges are at the midpoint of their harvesting season.
California Valencias are available from February to October.
California Navels are available from November through May.
Florida Valencias are available from January until July.
