Matty
Matoian is our President and CEO. He has spent his entire life
devoted to his family's business, OK Produce. Matty began in 1955
at age 12, fixing lettuce boxes and sweeping the floors. At age
15, he began pitching watermelons during his summers and by age
16 he would go on deliveries with Ray Nixon. At age 17, Matty
spent his summers unloading bananas which used to come by train
on the stalk. By age 18, Matty was making deliveries on local
city routes, loading trucks and assembling orders in the shipping
warehouse. Throughout his college years, Matty worked weekends
and all holidays. His summers were spent working split shifts,
delivering in the morning and working the receiving department
in the evening. Upon graduation, Matty came on board full time
side by side with his father Charles. From 1965-1968 he began
buying mushrooms, citrus and avocados and filling in for employees
on vacation. At age 23, Matty took on the responsiblities of the
food service department, which he called his "baby" and soon thereafter
implemented the afternoon phone ordering system. In addition,
Matty began to add items to his buying list as employees began
to retire. In 1979, Charles Matoian was forced to take a rest
due to an illness. Consequently, Matty stepped in as President
and in 1987 led our team into our expanded building and current
home. In Matty's 45 years of experience here at OK Produce he
has performed just about every job. In addition to his on-the-job
experience, Matty has attended the PMA leadership conference every
year since 1995. Each year from 1990-1992, Matty attended a month
long educational program at Harvard University for Officers, Presidents
and Managers. Today he continues to lead OK Produce on a day to
day basis.
